Grow Organic Eggs at Home

Organic eggs grown in a hen house at home.

Many people often think about starting a small chicken coop at home. If you do grow eggs at home, you have the option of growing free range eggs or organic eggs. A hen house can be closed, limiting the movement of the laying hens – or you can fence an area and allow them to free range. If you want organic eggs all you have to do is feed them the right chicken feed. Your kitchen scraps can go into the mix – no avo or cabbage for chickens who are laying – it inhibits the process – but almost every other bit of vegetable scraps that you have – the hens will love. From your veggie garden can come all the damaged veggies – chickens love lucerne, spinach, carrots, tomatoes – a small portion of their food can be purchased – chicken food is readily available around S.A. If the hens are free ranging they will supplement their diet with most bugs and worms found in your garden. Chicken houses, hens houses and chicken coops can be home built or you can get a chicken house builder to put one up for you. Poultry houses can be made of wood or of steel – steel is far superior as it can be properly washed and sanitised – disease is probably the main reason for losing birds or having low egg yields. Small chicken houses made of steel come in sizes from 3m x 3m up to 30m 6m – enough for 3000 chickens
